Start with vehicle identity

A useful engine inquiry normally begins with the vehicle year, make, model, buyer location, and VIN if the buyer provides it. Trim or application details may also help.

A VIN can help resolve application questions, but it may not be available on every inquiry. A record should not be described as fitment-verified merely because a VIN is present.

Look for engine and application details

Engine requests become more actionable when the buyer supplies relevant details such as:

  • Engine displacement, fuel type, and cylinder count.
  • Turbocharged or naturally aspirated application.
  • VIN digit, engine code, or emissions application.
  • Whether the request concerns a complete engine, long block, or another configuration.
  • Notes about the failed unit or desired replacement.

The exact fields vary by vehicle and by what the customer knows.

Make sure your team can reach the buyer

A record also needs a practical way to continue the conversation. That may include the buyer’s name, phone number, email address, preferred contact method, location, timing, and additional comments.

Contact information does not prove that the buyer will answer. It gives the seller an opportunity to make an appropriate follow-up attempt.

Know where the details came from

Ask which details came directly from the buyer and whether any were checked or confirmed before delivery. A correctly formatted phone number does not mean the engine application has been verified.

Evaluate the seller fit as well as the record

When reviewing a sample, ask:

  • Can our team identify the likely application?
  • Is there enough information to begin a fitment conversation?
  • Does the category match what we sell?
  • Can we fulfill the buyer’s location?
  • Are customer-supplied and checked fields distinguished?
  • Can we contact the buyer using an appropriate channel?

Even a strong inquiry only fits a seller that can source, ship, and support the requested engine. See the demonstration engine record for a clear field example.
