What “exclusive” and “shared” mean
An exclusive lead is provided to one participating vendor under the provider’s stated terms. A shared lead may be provided to a limited number of vendors.
Before you buy, ask:
- Whether exclusivity applies to one company, location, territory, or account.
- How many businesses receive a shared inquiry.
- Whether the record can be redistributed later.
- Whether the same definition covers phone, email, and web-form delivery.
- How duplicates are identified and handled.
Exclusive delivery limits direct competition from other program recipients, but it does not guarantee a sale. Shared leads are not automatically lower quality.
What changes for your sales team
Exclusive distribution reduces direct competition from other program recipients, but the buyer may still contact sellers independently. Shared distribution usually places more pressure on first-response coverage, call handling, accurate quoting, follow-up discipline, and clear differentiation.
Both models require a team that can review the vehicle information, confirm the application, check inventory, and provide a professional quote.
Cost, volume, and capacity tradeoffs
Exclusive programs may have a different cost or availability profile. Shared programs may provide more opportunities within a given budget, but each inquiry can involve more competition.
The useful comparison is not cost per lead alone. Track:
- Contact rate.
- Quote rate.
- Close rate.
- Cost per acquired sale.
- Gross profit generated.
- Staff time required per completed sale.
When each model may fit
Exclusive leads may fit a business that:
- Prioritizes reduced direct competition from other recipients.
- Has experienced salespeople for high-value parts.
- Wants clearer source attribution.
- Can support the available category and buyer location.
Shared leads may fit a business that:
- Maintains dependable call and inbox coverage.
- Responds promptly and follows up consistently.
- Wants to evaluate a different cost and competition structure.
- Can work multiple opportunities without sacrificing quote quality.
How to compare results fairly
Track exclusive and shared leads separately using the same measurements and time period: leads, contacts, quotes, completed sales, gross profit, reported issues, credits, and total acquisition cost.
A lower-priced lead is not automatically less expensive if it produces a higher cost per completed sale. Use the auto parts lead ROI calculator to compare your own assumptions.
